Kochi's climate

Kochi Prefecture faces the Pacific Ocean. It has a warm, humid climate with its rainy season from June to the end of July. The annual average temperature is around 17℃. The hottest season is after rainy season, and the maximum temperature rises to about 35℃. There is a typhoon season around September - October. In spring and autumn, the climate is very moderate and pleasant. In winter, it snows in the mountains, but generally it has fine days. The temperature can drop to three degrees below zero at night, and there can be a big temperature change during the day.

Cafeterias and restaurants around the Center

  • Kochi University Coop Open from 8:15 to 19:00 on weekdays, and from 11:00 to 13:30 on Saturdays, during semesters.
    Open for shorter hours on weekdays only, during summer and winter holidays;
  • Urameshi-ya Nearest from the Core Center (2 minute walk). You can eat home cooking style set meals at low prices. Open till about 8 o’clock at night.
  • Box lunch You can order a box lunch for 400-500 yen. (Order at Administration Office by around 9:15 in the morning)

Sightseeing tours

  • Whale watching In the sea of Kochi inhabit sperm whales, Bryde’s whales, Grampus griseus, common dolphins, and many other marine animals.
    Tour season: April-September (reservation required)
  • Ryugadou experience tour Ryugadou is one of the three largest limestone caves in Japan. The tour course goes around inside the cave.
    Adventure course: High school student or above; 1,500 yen.
    Required time; 1 hour and 30 minutes
    Normal course: Adult, high school student; 1,000 yen
    Access: About 30 minutes by bus from the JR Tosa-Yamada Station

And, Yoshino River rafting, Shimanto River canoe touring, etc.

  • Kochi Castle (Kochi city) A castle with 400 years history. You can visit a museum and the castle tower.

  • Harimaya Bridge A red bridge known by the tragic love story, “I saw a monk buy an ornamental hairpin”.

  • The Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden A botanical garden in connection with Dr. Tomitaro Makino who supported Japanese botany

  • Shikoku Karst Tengu Kogen A peculiar scenery with scattered limestones on a plateau for a cool and comfortable visit in summer.
    Access: About 2 hours (via Suzaki-higashi IC) by car from Kochi city
  • Muroto Cape Lighthouse (Muroto city) The symbol of Muroto Cape is the chalk white lighthouse. It has the largest diameter lens in Japan.
    Access: About 2 and half hours by car from Kochi city.
